Hot For Words by Marina
August 9, 2008 by David
Marina Orlova is a philologist (one who studies linguistics and etymology). She really enjoys discussing the origins of words and their meaning.
Apparently she’s not the only one that enjoys the discussing the meaning and origin of words. Marina’s
videos on YouTube at YouTube-hotforwords are insanely popular and have been viewed 94,000,000 times and counting. Even Bill O’Reilly tried to jump on this GURRLS bandwagon by having Marina on his show to talk about words! More about that and other Hot For Words press here.
Like any respectable Gurrl, Marina is peeling off YouTube users to her own Website so she can better monetize her God-given talent and her talent as a philologist earned via hard work and study. She is after all an online celebrity turned phenomena. Check it out here: Hot For Words
In her latest video Marina discusses how the term “peanut gallery came to be used as we know it. It’s great. If , like me, you’ve been a frequent member of the peanut gallery at events during your life then you’ll appreciate the limelight that rarely shines on those in the “nosebleed” seats.
I’d love to hear what you think of Marina!

PG-17??? I just did a lesson for my youngest student who I think is about 3 years old.. for the origin of the word booger! Of course a 3 year old would ask for that!
Thanks for the writeup!

LOL! I actually wrote “PG-17″? Late I guess. I shouldn’t be too surprised that Marina caught it and busted me. Thanks for stopping by Marina and pointing out that my very first post had an oops in it!
Hey Marina – two things…
1) Thank you for turning me on to the cocomment thingamajig (sp?)!
2) After receiving your grade of “D-” on my blog post about you and your site I found myself editing quite a few things. Seems I get really stupid when I’m writing about you! STUPID. Have you discussed the word STUPID yet?
Best teacher ever.
